Square 1 Art

I meant to post this back in May.  Every year our school participates in Square 1 Art. Students get a square piece of paper and they create a piece of art with markers, crayons, oil pastels, or anything.  We send the artwork into the Square 1 Art company and they make a sheet of stickers for each child with their own artwork on it.  They also have the chance to buy gifts likes mugs or tote bags with their artwork on it.

One of my students uses her stickers to seal envelopes, like on the Teacher Appreciation card she gave me.  Another student sticks his on a magnet sheet and gives them to grandparents (or teachers) as gifts.

This year I got Tanner and Isaac to submit their art.  Here's what I got:

A mousepad, art by Isaac, and a keychain, Life is a Highway, by Tanner

A sketchbook with Tanner's picture of him with 2 dogs and the sky overhead.

Art Night

Here are the promised pictures from my school's art night:

Every class does a clay project.  This is my favorite.  I want one of these for an olive dish.

I liked these frames and the quote next to it.

1st grade work.

I thought these were cool.  The top is cut styrofoam, and the reflection is a print.

Loved these.  They had all kind of animals - giraffes, snakes, birds.

I don't know the name of the artist that they studied, but the 2nd graders put all kinds of things in the picture with themselves.  I liked the girl with Kermit the Frog, but I couldn't find the pic.

Fourth Grade

My class studied and artist that made skinny sculptures.  Ours were made with wire and duct tape.

I should have learned the names of these artist.  These were self-portraits, but the artist we copied drew long necks and distorted features.

My art mom brought in an old typewriter and sewing machine.  The kids had to draw these with one continuous line.  I'd like to frame these for an office or sewing room.

I'd like to frame these too.

Freedom Weekend...not

Terry was in Utah for three days and I thought I'd have a wild weekend where I could do whatever, and eat whatever, and watch whatever, and wear whatever I wanted.  Not really a wild weekend.  I meant to stay up until 11:00, drink a diet soda without guilt, watch David Letterman for the last time, and wear my pajamas all day, but that dream just didn't work out....

The first night was a school night and I had grading to do.  Friday was a crazy, long day.
My school has an Art Night which is a big production.  Every hall in the school is covered with black paper and student art (I'll post pictures later).  They have high school orchestra students come and play, and have Jr. high students from National Honor Society serving hors d'oeuvres.  I like seeing all the amazing art projects, but they're better viewed an hour before the event.  The halls are too crowded to even move in.  This year our principal wanted as many teachers as were able to come and support the PTO.  I left school at 4:00 to meet my visiting teacher partner for some visits, and then got back in time to get a parking place, and stayed until 8:00.

I was exhausted when I got home.  It was too cold for a diet soda, and I couldn't stay awake. I did sleep in and had a relaxing morning, but Terry was anxious to be home, so he left SLC at 6:00 PM in a snow storm, and cut my freedom weekend short. It was nice going to church with him the next morning, but I'm still longing for a wild weekend of alone time.

Art in the Park

This is always my favorite weekend in Boise.  I didn't take Friday off, like I have the past two years.  I just finished things on Friday as fast as I could, and then went with Terry to walk around and get some dinner.  It was a perfect night.  Besides dinner, we finished off a big bag of kettle corn.  I can't pass that up ever.

The next morning I called to see if my usual family members were up for a walk around.  Andrea was out of town, Nan was busy, Mom wasn't feeling well, but of course, Dad was up and ready to go.  It was just the two of us.  We started before the booths were open with our traditional cinnamon roll and hot chocolate.  We covered most of the park, bought a woodpecker made of metal scraps to put on top of Millie's scratching post, a silk scarf for Mom, and a crocheted scarf for me.  It was great spending 3 hours of my favorite weekend with Dad.

I bought a big oval mirror from IKEA this summer.  I want a mosaic frame.

I've never done a mosaic, but I'm wondering if I could do one like these.

Mom's Gift

It's my mom's birthday.  My sister and I usually scout out Arts in the Park and find something we can go in together on.  This year I went to Arts in the Park with Mom.  The only thing that tempted her was a booth where an artist, Julie Peterson, painted little birds and flowers.  Later that afternoon, I went back and picked up a couple little prints for her - one for summer, and one for winter.

The next morning I returned to Arts in the Park, early, so I could find a good parking place.  A lot of the booths weren't even opened yet.  I had just ordered a scone for breakfast when I spotted my sister and her husband across the way.  Nan had already found the perfect gift for Mom, a print of little chickadees and roses from Julie Peterson.

It was freaky!  I guess Nan just knows Mom.  I'm sure she'll love the gifts.  I just need to order another frame so that the little collection will be cohesive.

Spring City Celebration

Spring City Public School - 1899

The church we should have toured - 1896

Spring City is a pioneer town and Memorial Day is the highlight of the year.  The little town is bustling with visitors and cars, but not so busy that the horse drawn wagons rides get in the way.  People don't picnic in the cemetery these days.  The town hosts a turkey BBQ dinner at the high school.  Funds go to a renovation fund for the old rock school building.  We went through the old school because they had an art show and auction going on.  It was also a stop for the wagon rides, and the place to buy your home show tickets.  Spring City is becoming a flourishing artist community.  It's not so far from Provo, and there are professors that retire or have summer homes there.  Many have bought the original pioneer homes and renovated them.  Each year they have about 15 homes that are open to the public.  Along the way you can view a lot of art, buy pottery, woven rugs, or fresh rhubarb punch.  It was a beautiful day and the town is so small you can walk everywhere.  We checked out root cellars, workshops, gardens, studios, the cinema, and the rhubarb pie.  It was all great!

Artistic Endeavors

There was an art show at my school last night.  We really have quite an amazing program.  The halls were covered with black paper and tables draped in black.  Orchestra and piano students took turns playing classical music, the PTO members were dressed up in evening wear, and hors d'oeuvres were served.  Art moms teach about different artists and cultures.  Everyone recently had lessons on African and Egyptian art.  I posted a few (8 or 9) of my favorites, but there were so many different projects, I think I need to start a new blog just to save art ideas for kids.

Green Chutes

A very cool place has opened in the revitalized Collister Shopping Center.  It's an art gallery-studio-cafe-hangout-co-op.  I went to the grand opening with my artist friend Mary.  It's a mini Art in the Park with lots of places to sit and relax.  I think I want to hangout there.  I want a Green Chutes t-shirt too.  I'm definitely going back to buy some button beaded jewelry.  One of my former students was there with some of his work to be displayed.  I loved his prints - bright, funny, and happy.  He'll be a successful animator soon.  Right now he has to finish high school, but his name is Andrew Adams and I knew him when he drew darling cartoons on his fourth grade papers.
